Intent:

At Holy Trinity, we strive to support children in becoming global citizens. Through the teaching and learning of Spanish, children are supported to become skilful communicators who can work all over the world, with an understanding of one of the most widely spoken international languages with over 500 million native Spanish speakers worldwide. Our intention is to use the inclusive and engaging curriculum to foster an interest in learning about other cultures and languages. With a progression of skills across the Spanish curriculum, children become increasingly confident and skilled in conversing in Spanish with a basic understanding of the grammatical structure of the language.

Implementation:

Our Spanish curriculum is delivered by an external specialist and native Spanish speaker. Class teachers remain in class during the weekly lessons to upskill themselves and learn with the children. Children revisit and build upon previously taught skills to broaden their vocabulary and knowledge. With the support of the Primary Languages Network scheme of work, teaching and learning covers reading, writing, speaking, and listening and is based on skills to support children to work as linguists. Work is differentiated to support every child, no matter what stage of their language learning journey they are at. Children often work collaboratively with mixed ability pairs, in a small group or as a whole class with opportunities to refine their skills individually. We work with a wide range of materials and activities including role-play, games, songs, stories, rhymes, and sentence building activities to name a few.

Impact:

By the time children have left Holy Trinity, we aim for them to have developed:

• Communication skills with clarity in the Spanish language
• A broad bank of vocabulary with the ability to apply this knowledge to understand new words and speak in sentences
• The knowledge and confidence to clearly communicate ideas and information orally to different audiences
• The ability to engage in conversations in Spanish, listening attentively and responding, expressing ideas, asking, and answering questions, or for clarity and help when needed
• An accurate pronunciation and intonation to ensure they are understood by others when reading aloud or speaking
• An understanding of patterns and grammatical structures using morphology and etymology, having been exposed to the Spanish language in a variety of different forms
• The ability to describe people, places, things, and actions both orally and in writing
• The ability to closely read Spanish materials to show an understanding of the meaning of words, phrases, and simple writing
• The ability to write phrases from memory and using these to create new sentences
