Year 4

Year 4 have been studying 'The Day the Crayons Quit' series of books by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers and we have been blown away by the amazing response!

This week we read 'Love from the Crayons' and asked the children to write their own poems describing what love is to them through colours and we were left speechless!

We hope you enjoy reading their beautiful poems as much as we did.

Love is...

Thursday 18th March

Hello Year 4,

It is our last day of remote learning before we go back to school tomorrow. Remember, it is Red Nose Day so we are wearing our own clothes and thinking of a joke to share with our classes. Don't forget to send photographs of your work to y4@holytrinity.manchester.sch.uk . We are excited to display your 'Love is' poems on our school website because we were blown away when you read them to us yesterday!

Our zoom calls are at the same time today with the same link:

4H: 11:00 – 11:50

4T: 13:00 – 13:50

A huge well done and thank you for working so hard during our bubble closure. You are all AMAZING!

We are looking forward to seeing you back at school tomorrow smiley

Today is a lovely lesson! We are going to learn about another story in 'The Day the Crayons Quit' series called "Love from the Crayons".

Listen to the story being read aloud here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBW_fB0Hn8o&t=19s

This story is all about how love can be different colours and for all sorts of different reasons. Both Red and Green pack are completing their own 'Love is' poem today. You can use the template below or be creative and present your poem however you would like! You could even film yourself performing your poem and send the video to us.

Extra challenge: you could write the 'Love is ____' and the colour in a different language you know. You could use the Spanish colours we have learnt in class or another language you enjoy speaking.

The Year 4 Team

Morning

English

Both Red and Green Tasks are the same today. Last week we were studying ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ and ‘The Day the Crayons Came Back’. Because you did so well planning your letter to Duncan in school last week, we would like you to plan another letter from a different crayon.

Here are links to videos of the story books being read aloud:

The Day the Crayons Quit - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=489micE6eHU

The Day the Crayons Came Home - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKmJ2NRhcgo

In this task you should:

  • Come up with a new crayon character. Remember, your name will need to start with a capital letter because it is a proper noun.
  • Ask Duncan a question. Remember to punctuate it with a question mark and use powerful vocabulary. For example: How could you abandon me like that Duncan?
  • Think of a new location. Where in the world do you want to send your postcard/letter from? Be adventurous!
  • Uh oh, there’s a new problem! What could it be? Are you stuck up a tree in Boggart Hole Clough? Have you been eaten by a koala bear in Australia?
  • What is the solution? What could Duncan do to help you?

Use Brilliant Writing Bingo to help you think of exciting language features to make this the best letter you have written. Click on this link to take you to the Brilliant Writing Bingo Wheel Spinner which will help you select which feature to add:

https://wheelofnames.com/3sx-k4p

Maths

Red Task: counting in steps of 5. You can listen to the ‘Counting by 5s’ song before you complete the worksheet to help you. If you want a challenge, you can play the sequencing game. You will need your Mathsframe log in details to access this game.

Counting by 5s song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_awKlEMyleA

Sequencing game: https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/42/sequences

Green Task: arithmetic practise. Question 6 on both pages asks you to add fractions with the same denominator. We have not covered this yet in Year 4 so here is a link to a website that will help you answer the question:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z3qwcmn

There is also an interactive quiz you can try!

Maths Game

Today’s maths game is Stone Age Stu to help you remember Roman numerals to 100.

Wellbeing

As we swapped over our lessons so you could have a relaxing Art lesson on Friday today is our wellbeing lesson. Your task is to draw a picture which represents your inner self and outer self. Your outer self is what other people can see (your appearance) and your inner self is your personality and all the special things that make you unique.

10 - 15 minutes every day of practise is essential.

Please complete the Garage game if you have not already. Miss Wilson and I are going to be giving out certificates when we get back to school to the children who have put the most effort on TTRS over the next week.

This week we are also looking at fun interactive ways to practise our times tables. The times tables songs we have learnt in class are by ‘Have Fun Teaching’ and can be found on youtube. This is the link to the 7 times table song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMNf9vrFfC8

I have also found a whole range of times tables raps that you will have a fantastic time singing and dancing to at home. Let me know which are your favourites! (I think mine is the 7 times table – it’s so catchy!).

Friday 12th March

Hello again Year 4 smiley

It was so lovely to see you at school this week! Although we will miss seeing you all, it is not for long and we will back at school next Friday to celebrate Red Nose Day together. We will be uploading your learning to this page every day for 9 am and request that you send photographs of your completed work to y4@holytrinity.manchester.sch.uk every day. If you have any questions at all (or if you just want to say hello to your teacher!) you can use this email address to contact us.

This time we are doing maths a bit differently as we are going to use the week to develop our arithmetic skills. There is not a video with a matching worksheet for these lessons, although we may post a video when we feel it may help you in your learning. For everyone who can log on to the class page, we will upload the worksheets on here daily then the questions can be copied into your home learning book or any other paper you have at home. You will not receive a paper pack. If you require a new home learning book, please email us to let us know and we will arrange for one to be left at the school office for you. We are sending packs out to students who do not have internet access, if your circumstances have changed since our last period of remote learning and you now need a paper pack, please let us know via email or the school office and this can be arranged.

A member of the Year 4 team will be making contact over the next week via telephone and we will also have daily zoom classes (more information will be sent out direct to parents).

Thank you for being so resilient and adaptable - you are amazing!

We look forward to talking to you over the next week smiley

Morning

Maths

Quite a few people found yesterday's lesson a bit tricky so I have posted some pictures that may help. I have also uploaded the answer sheets from yesterday so you can check your answers and spot your mistakes. Remember, mistakes are good because we can learn from them!

Before you start the lesson recap the skills you learnt yesterday by playing this game: https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/117/telling-the-time-in-words .

There are no videos today so I have uploaded the teaching slides.

This is the 4T maths display. Remember, the minute hand is longer than the hour hand.

This is the teaching clock on our 4T maths display. Remember, the long hand tells us the minutes and the short hand tells us the hour.

R

Read the clock carefully to see if you should be describing the time as minutes PAST the hour (green half) or minutes TO the hour (purple half).

English

Today's lesson is investigating suffixes (past and present tense). This will be very important when we come to write our non-chronological reports so make sure to listen carefully. As usual, please complete this work straight into your home learning book however I have also uploaded the worksheet for reference.
